East Kalimantan

East Kalimantan is the second largest province in Indonesia after Irian Jaya. It is rich in natural resources: coal in Berau, Kutai Kartanegara regency, crude palm oil from Kutai Timur regency, crude oil  from Balikpapan offshore, natural Gas from Bontang.

Kutai Kartanegara

Kutai Kartanegara is the one of the most developed regency(kabupatan) with cities like Sanga2, Tengarong, Melak. Kutai Kartanegara also encompasses the city of Samarinda.

Mahakam River

Mahakam river is about 920km long travelling mainly through Kutai Kartanegara regency. It is connected at the upper section to Kutai Barat, Kutai Kertanegara and Central Kalimantan and runs through Samarinda city before exiting via Delta Mahakam.

Mahakam River  serves as main transportation route running through many mining sites and palm oil plantations. Many coal barges are seen daily bringing coal from upriver to Delta Mahakam to do transhipment.
